Why should you use an accredited hemp laboratory?
Accredited hemp testing laboratories meet very specific criteria. For example ISO 17025, includes a requirement to validate the testing methods used in our specialized hemp testing laboratory. ISO 17025 is a standard that ensures the quality, accuracy, and efficacy of our laboratory testing methods. The test methods used are validated to encompass this standard so our clients are provided the highest level of confidence in our results.

Does the laboratory need to be DEA approved?
No, after reviewing the limited number of DEA approved laboratories, the USDA postponed this requirement. You can learn more about this issue on the USDA’s website on this page:

How should I collect the samples from the field/greenhouse?
For the most accurate results, you should follow a random sampling method pulling biomass from 3 to 4 plants representative of the strain you are testing. Samples should be taken from some of the top colas of the hemp plant. Random sampling means each plant has an equal probability of being chosen for the sample. Please note, some states mandate that their own Department of Agriculture employees or samplers trained by the Department of Agriculture must be used. Please contact customer service for further information regarding this.

Should I submit my samples for testing “wet” or “dry”? Why does moisture content matter?
It is best to provide the lab with dry samples (between 5%-15% moisture) for optimal testing conditions, as well as eliminating extended turnaround time required for the dehydration process. Moisture content promotes the growth of microbiological contaminants such as yeast/mold and other pathogenic bacteria. If you have no way of testing moisture, please dry the material until it is brittle and easy to break apart.

What is a “HIP”?
A HIP is a “hemp infused product”, i.e. a dog treat, cookie, or beverage infused with CBD.

Do I need to provide a serving size?
If you do not provide a serving size your report will be reported in the following format: percent by weight (%w/w) for flower product, and mg/g for infused products.

What is a COA?
A COA is an acronym for Certificate of Analysis. This report documents all the data for your requested tests. This COA “lives” in your PCR Client Portal. You can download it from the portal, print labels for your products from the portal, make it public for customers to see it on your portal, and print unique QR codes for each product you have tested with PHR Labs.

Will Pennsylvania accept a COA from PHR Labs?
Yes. PHR Labs is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

Can I drop off my sample at the lab?
Samples drop-offs will be conducted by a Client Service Representative at our facility. You can schedule an appointment to drop off your sample with the Client Service Team by emailing

How long will my tests take?
Most results will be emailed to the email address you provide in 2-5 business days. Please understand that microbiological testing needs a 72 hour incubation period. The lab operates on a first in, first out basis. Requests for priority will be evaluated based on the current sample volume, and we may not always be able to accommodate.

What is the status of my sample or how do I interpret these results?

Do I need to include a copy of my license in the shipment?
Please place a photocopy of your state issued hemp license in the parcel with your sample if you are growing hemp and are not already a client.
